DECEMBER 29, 2016 — Shipbroker Marcon International, Inc., Coupeville, WA, has passed an outstanding development. In the course of the most recent 35 years it has expedited 322 pulls for deals or sanction, totaling 1,005,657 HP.
Taking Marcon past the million strength check was the offer of the 7,200 HP pull Jimmy Smith (ex-Gulf Commander) to private U.S. West Coast purchasers — and the second offer of the vessel handled by Marcon.
The 150.0' x 40.1' x 22.0' profundity/20.2' stacked draft, twin sink pull was manufactured 1976 by Equitable Shipyards, Inc. of Madisonville, LA, as the Gulf Commander. She was one of two sister, seaward grapple taking care of pulls worked for Gulf Mississippi Marine, which later got to be Gulf Fleet Marine of Houston, Texas in 1978 and Zapata Gulf Marine Service in 1985. Tidewater, Inc. procured the pull in its 1992 securing of Zapata Gulf.
In 2002, Marcon facilitated the offer of the Gulf Commander from Tidewater to Honolulu-based Smith Maritime/Hawaiian Inter-island Towing and pull was renamed Jimmy Smith\ after the organization's author. Subsequent to being assembled from the Gulf Coast and finishing a broad shipyard upkeep and repair period, the pull upheld Smith Maritime's between island petroleum exchange and rescue operations.
In 2004, "Jimmy Smith" cruised from Honolulu and effectively towed in the 4,300 TEU, completely loaded containership Hanjin Pretoria, dead in the water around 1,000 miles north of Hawaii after a fundamental motor disappointment.
K-Sea Transportation of New Jersey acquired the Jimmy Smith in 2007 when it obtained Smith Maritime. After four years Kirby Corporation finished its obtaining of K-Sea and its armada of 58 tank canal boats and 63 pulls including the Jimmy Smith.
The raised forecastle bow pull is controlled by twin EMD 20-645E7A diesels with Reintjes WAV 4800 5:1 riggings and 144" x 144" 4-edge settled pitch props on 12" shafts in kort spouts, in addition to is fitted with a 535 HP bow thruster to improve mobility. She has a bollard of 103 short tons and free running velocity of abt. 11 – 13 kn on 220 – 330 gph. Her 221,400 lady fuel limit gives the pull a scope of abt. 11,070 nm at 11 kn. Towing gear comprises of an Intercon DD 250 twofold drum next to each other tow winch with a wire limit of abt. 4,000' and 2,000' of 2" wire, stern roller and Intercon tow pins.
Jimmy Smith was laid up in crisp water at the season of this most recent deal.
Marcon takes note of that with the present normal age of the U.S. hail maritime pull armada is 34 years (constructed 1982), the offer of the forty year pull is a decent case of "out with the old, in with the new" and armada recharging in the towing business.
